Shishukunj International School, Bhuj, Gujarat, India

The SIS Bhuj school campus is a sustainable development within the kutch salt-marsh ecosystem of Gujarat. The school is conceived as a series of cluster modules in response to both the landscape and teaching ethos of the school. The buildings are literally built from the rock and dust of the site.

The project utilises the inherent abundant natural resources of the landscape, and will act as a live laboratory for both educational- and environmental-related work. Passive solar design principles, using prevailing winds for natural cooling, orientation of buildings for shading, and planned landscaping strategies are all deployed to leverage maximum advantage of the surrounding ecosystem and topography.

Shishukunj (‘a garden of children’ in Sanskrit) is primarily an organisation dedicated to preserving the values and cultural traditions of the Gujarati community and the development of children’s potential within a caring community. Our team have supported Shishukunj’s charitable and education work for many years in the UK, India and Africa.
